Mark "Sky Viper" Sturino

Mark “Sky Viper” Sturino is one of Pleasant Storm’s most celebrated hometown figures—a rare combination of elite athlete and space-age pioneer.

A standout football player at Pleasant Storm High School, Sturino earned statewide recognition in the late 1960s and was later named a Texas All-Star, known for his speed, discipline, and unshakable focus under pressure. Those same qualities would define his next—and far less expected—chapter.

After college, Sturino was selected for astronaut training during the height of the 1970s space program. Nicknamed “Sky Viper” by fellow trainees for his calm, coiled intensity and razor-sharp reaction time, he went on to serve on multiple missions in support roles critical to orbital navigation and systems operations.

Though never one to seek the spotlight, Sturino became quietly respected within the astronaut corps for bridging two worlds: the physical grit of competitive sports and the precision demanded by spaceflight. Colleagues often noted that his football background gave him an edge when teamwork and split-second decisions mattered most.

Despite his national and international achievements, Sturino remained closely tied to Pleasant Storm. He returned often, attending Friday night games, speaking to students, and reminding young athletes that discipline, preparation, and humility matter as much as talent.

Today, Mark “Sky Viper” Sturino is remembered in Pleasant Storm as proof that ambition doesn’t have to leave its roots behind—and that a kid from a Texas town can reach both the end zone and the stars.
