Jared “Hurricane Hugo” Kremer

Founder of Hugoville • Military Veteran • Controversial Figure

Jared Hugo Kremer, later known as “Hurricane Hugo,” was the founder of what would become Pleasant Storm and one of the town’s most complex early figures.

Kremer was born in 1827 to foreign immigrant parents, part of a generation raised between old-world traditions and the realities of a rapidly expanding America. His early life was marked by discipline, transience, and a familiarity with hardship—traits that would later define both his leadership style and reputation.

As a young man, Kremer entered military service and later served during the Spanish–American War. It was during this period that he earned the nickname “Hurricane Hugo,” reportedly for his ability to move quickly through chaos, make decisive calls under pressure, and leave lasting impact wherever he was stationed. Fellow soldiers described him as relentless, pragmatic, and unbothered by moral hand-wringing if results were achieved.

After his service, Kremer returned to Texas and settled just south of Fort Worth, recognizing the steady flow of soldiers rotating through the area. In 1850, he established a small outpost intended to provide rest, supplies, and diversion for servicemen. He named the settlement Hugoville.

What Kremer envisioned as a functional support town soon took on a life of its own. Hugoville became known for its entertainment, excess, and permissive atmosphere—earning a reputation as a place where soldiers could unwind in ways not welcomed elsewhere. Over time, locals began referring to the town as Pleasant Storm, a name that reflected both its appeal and its volatility. The name eventually replaced Hugoville officially, and Kremer allowed the change without objection.

Kremer’s later years were marked by declining health and increasing withdrawal from public life. He died in 1899 from complications related to syphilis, just one year before what would have marked the town’s 50th anniversary. His death passed quietly, with little ceremony, as Pleasant Storm was already beginning to rewrite its own origin story.

Today, Jared “Hurricane Hugo” Kremer is remembered as a founder who understood human nature better than decorum. His legacy remains inseparable from Pleasant Storm itself—a town born not from ideals, but from necessity, appetite, and momentum.
